Cross-platform development changing the IT landscape

The IT landscape is changing. Organisations were once locked into specific platforms or operating systems with no room for flexibility. Now, the onset of cross-platform development is unlocking the chains and allowing organisations to use applications that they could not have considered previously. What advantages does this new form of development offer to your organisation?

The enterprise world is becoming a much more open place. Cross-platform development, virtual desktops and new integration technologies are changing the IT landscape and are allowing greater mobility than ever before. Organisations are now considering a myriad of devices to enable their employees to become more mobile.

“As more and more applications are developed as browser-based rather than as desktop applications, the effect is a decrease in the dependency on a specific operating system and an increase in flexibility,” commented Kareem Tawansi, CEO of software development provider, Solentive Software.

“Application users are no longer heavily tied to purchasing a particular machine, operating system or software package. This means they can purchase a variety of hardware from netbooks, tablets, and slates to full-fledged high-end desktops. Users will also have the option of choosing Windows, OS X, Linux or any operating system that can host browsers that comply with the latest standards. Furthermore, they will not be constrained to a particular software package.

“With so many great options offered in the cloud, with prices ranging from on-demand to free, the traditional software licensing costs are falling,” concluded Kareem.
