The new open world

Open source software has been around for decades; however it has only recently begun picking-up momentum. Today, large multinational software companies such as Microsoft have begun embracing the open source movement. Is the open source movement a threat to such a company as Microsoft or does it present new opportunities?

“In its history, Microsoft has appeared to understand that allowing people to access their products outside the rules has served to their benefit. This sort of thinking is likely to be behind their leniency towards allowing a jail breaking mobile application to be available through the Windows Phone Marketplace. Microsoft seems to understand that by opening up its system, they will be supporting innovation,” commented Kareem Tawansi, CEO of software development provider, Solentive Software.

“Furthermore, by allowing the operating system to be used outside of the way it was intended, there appears to be opportunities to target a new market for the Windows Phone 7 device,” concluded Kareem.

It’s a new open world. Jump on board or get left behind.
